Can this be used outside for parcels left by the postman? Would it keep them dry?

I have it outside for my glass recycling. Seems to be quite watertight at the moment. Lid locks well.

Can you remove the yellow handles? I'd intend to leave this in the garden & would be happy just to lift the lid on/off. But the yellow is unsightly.

Yes. Quite easily but if you did remove the handles the lid might blow away. We stored some down our side alley and the wind blew them off when we forgot to seal them properly.

Would this be able to hold the weight of 3 car batteries?

Yes it would hold three standard car batteries no problem, both in terms of weight & size. If you moving it around a lot I'm not sure the wheels would hold up long term.

Would this fit large refrence books in?

Yes. I've now bought four of them between 95 - 175 litres in size. Even the smallest one would hold several of the largest 'coffee table' sized books.
