undefinedThis is a beautifully written memoir. It is a pleasure to read, due to the quality of the storytelling and the lightness and humour which which the author treats some very serious subjects. The story starts in a mental hospital, and this is where the author's talent comes into its own - she writes coherently and convincingly about matters that would be hard to comprehend for anybody, not least for a mind that was then in complete turmoil. The author then tells of her privileged and privately educated childhood, and of the dark forces at work behind this seeming idyll - the havoc wrought by the struggle of both her parents with their individual addictions. The various incidents she describes are sometimes funny, sometimes sad, but always moving and expressed without a hint of self-pity. The chaos of her background sheds light on the anxiety which started when the author was young and progressed into the crippling disability that led her to be hospitalised at nineteen and labelled as schizophrenic. Now a writer, a wife and a mother of four, Louise has made sense of her experience, and created great success in her life. This is a book which should be read by those in the mental system - to help them to understand that even the most profoundly ill patient is still a person and that full recovery is possible from severe mental illness. It is also a book which should be read by anybody with an interest in human nature - the ability to triumph over adversity which is expressed in this wonderful memoir is truly inspirational.
